Dr. Barry Burkhart
[Curriculum Vitae]

Barry Burkhart came to Auburn in 1974 from Los Angeles, California to join the Department of Psychology at Auburn University as a new faculty member. It was not as big a culture shock as may be expected from the cross-country move, because Barry was born in north Alabama and grew up in Tallahassee, Florida.

Barry completed his Ph.D. at Florida State University and his internship in Clinical Psychology at University of Southern California in Los Angeles, hence his foray to the West Coast. Barry has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Auburn University since 1974, and was department chair from 2002 to 2008.

Barry has been a practicing psychologist since 1975 with specialties in adolescent and adult problems. He has a special interest in the treatment of trauma and victimization. Barry is also active in the community through service as a consultant to the Lee County Youth Development Center, and currently serves on several boards which provide psychological support to vulnerable populations.

Barry is Board Certified as a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology, and a Fellow in the Divisions of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy of the American Psychological Association.

Barry has a broad range of interests outside of psychology. He is interested in carpentry and sustainability. In combining these interests, Barry built one of the first passive solar houses in the area. He recently became interested in beekeeping and keeps several bee hives. "It is amazing and delightful to watch these busy creatures that seem so perfect a creation.”
